U.S. 24 Bridges over the Tiffin River
As part of the DEF-24-7.96 project, new twin bridges were designed over the Tiffin River. Each structure is a four span (120’-100’-100’-120’), composite, prestressed concrete beam with reinforced concrete deck superstructure supported on modified semi-integral abutments founded on drilled shafts and cap and column piers founded on drilled shafts. Construction of these bridges, with a combined estimated cost of $4,142,000, began in 2006 and were completed in 2008.
U.S. 24 Bridges over West High Street
As part of the DEF-24-7.96 project, new twin bridges were designed over West High Street, just outside of the City of Defiance. Each structure is a single span (61’ c/c bearings), composite, prestressed concrete beam with reinforced concrete deck superstructure supported on modified semi-integral abutments and MSE walls. Abutment piling is sleeved through the MSE wall embankment. Construction of these bridges, with a combined estimated cost of $1,158,000, began in 2006 and were completed in 2008.
S.R. 15/18 Bridge over U.S. 24
As part of the DEF-24-7.96 project, the existing S.R. 15/18 bridge over U.S. 24 was replaced utilizing part-width construction. The horizontal alignment was shifted to allow most of the existing bridge to carry Phase 1 traffic. The new bridge is a two span (86.5’-86.5’ c/c bearings), composite, prestressed concrete beam with reinforced concrete deck superstructure supported on semi-integral wall abutments supported on piling and a cap and column pier also supported on piling. The part-width construction necessitated the design of shoring details for the removal of the existing abutments and pier as well as the construction of the substructure units. Also, aesthetic enhancements were made to the abutments, piers, and deck fascia in keeping with the aesthetic theme of all the proposed bridges to be constructed as part of the entire U.S. 24 corridor. Construction of this bridge, with an estimated cost of $2,357,000, began in 2006 and were completed in 2008.
