The Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental automobile route in the United States. Beginning in New York and ending 3389 miles westward in San Francisco, it was conceived in 1913 by its founders as "a continuous connecting improved highway from the Atlantic to the Pacific." The Lincoln Highway as the catalyst of a "Good Roads" movement throughout America which ultimately involved the national government, which created the system of federal highways (in 1926) and the interstate highways (in 1956) that we take for granted today.
In Ohio, the traditional route of the Lincoln Highway is closely related to the route of U.S. 30, which crosses the north central part of the state. However, driving the route of the Lincoln Highway is not simply a matter of following U.S. 30. The typical two-lane route marked by the Boy Scouts in 1928 is methodically developing into a four-lane divided highway the should eventually cross the state. Because of several bypasses and other improvements, many parts of the historic route are now county roads and township roads. Other portions are in various states of abandonment, depending on their use and when they were abandoned.
A History and Road Guide of the Lincoln Highway in Ohio is a project designed to help both highway historians and touring aficionados find their way across the state. The 1928 route is the featured touring route, with earlier variations of the route also covered. Detailed odometer charts and maps, reminiscent of those found in the road guides of the 1920s, are the highlight of the project, and guide the traveler to every landmark and through every turn. Texts are also included which explain the history of the route and its several revisions.
